Falling for colour
Autumn the season for loving your home and its layers
For many of you, fall means two things: shorter days and the onset of dreaded winter! On the bright side of things, autumn can be a marvelous time to explore new trends in design and begin planning a new look for your home after a busy summer. New “it” “colour palettes, patterns, textures and design styles begin to emerge at this time of year, making me more optimistic about the months ahead. Like your wardrobe, fall is the time to start layering your home with warmer fabrics. Think of your interiors like your clothing, there needs be a change from season to season. It won’t take much—a change of pillows, a throw, or some new accessories will do the trick. This month, I’m going to give you tips on how to take these trends and incorporate them in subtle ways, making your space look updated, intentional and personalized.
Purple perfection
On the runways of Paris and Milan falls colour of choice this season, purple. Whether its iris, mauve, or aubergine, its definitely the hue to be seen in and, as we all know, fashion and home interiors go hand in hand. Incorporate this colour by ways of pillows, curtains, vases or artwork. Pair your purple of choice with grey to create the perfect combination no matter what your style is (the great thing is that it can be uber modern and traditional all at the same time). Purple is one of those flexible colours; it can be used as an eye-popping punch of colour or in a soothing, more subtle way.
Yummy Yellow
This bright, bold colour choice can also work well in the fall. It will brighten up any grey fall day and is one of the latest fabulous accent colour trends. Remember to use yellow only in small doses, though, as it can overpower a space and make small children (and designers) burst into tears. Fabulous hits of lemon yellows by way of accessories, is perfect to bring the sunshine back in when the leaves are falling outside.
Texture up
Colder days are bringing into the picture a lot more textural elements in terms of design. Try using luxurious fabrics like tweeds, wools, and cashmeres. These can come in the form of some gorgeous throws which are perfect to snuggle up to on a nippy fall day.
Cow and pony hides are also de rigueur. Typically seen used as rugs, more and more furniture pieces are being upholstered in hides. Mix up hides with modern elements to create a space with the right balance of rustic and modern appeal. Used in a warm way, the hide look can be inviting and chic.
Textured fabrics are also popping up this fall. It is less about silky, lustrous fabrics and more about woven, organic ones. You can use such fabrics for drapery panels and upholstery for larger pieces of furniture to add warmth to your space.
Reclaim to fame
Being green has moved beyond trendy and is becoming a necessary part of our lives and our styles. But for this fall, a lot more furniture companies are using reclaimed wood—everything from recycled wine crates to frames from older buildings are now being used as the source to making furniture.
This look is a little more rustic, but paired with the right elements, reclaimed articles will shine. Look for pieces that are a little bit used and beaten up, yet still sturdy and functional. It’s less about the piece looking perfect and new and more about being creative and saving a perfectly useful item from the landfill.
Lacquer it
Furniture has for so long been stuck in drab dark chocolate tones. Brighten up your décor this fall with a high-gloss lacquered piece. Taking its cue from an ancient Chinese practise, it is the process of applying several coats of lacquer paint to a piece of furniture to achieve a high gloss finish. Look for pieces that are finished in bright bold colours to add some drama to your space. Step outside the box when thinking about colour: lime greens, powdery blues, and outrageous oranges will definitely do the trick.
Remember that trends will always come and go and there are ways to incorporate them to ensure your look remkains timeless. Subtle bright accents and accessories are the way to go. It is easy to get carried away with thinking about trends. And for most of us, trends are just something we read about, but never follow through to make them happen in our homes. Take the plunge and put some effort into embracing fall and its trends! NL
