ONE OF THE MOST AWAITED games of chance in Calgary, the Kinsmen Children’s Hospital Home Lottery, is currently underway with 2,000 prizes to be won, retailing over $3.34 million. With much support from Calgarians over the years, the money raised from ticket purchases this year will provide funding for state-of-the art medical technology at the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary.

Shane Homes has been involved as a sponsor in the Children’s Hospital Home Lotto for 15 years, enabling the builder to contribute significantly to the continued care of children. The Cambrian and Kendro are this year’s homes up for the winning, and were unveiled to the public on their lots in Panorama Hills at the end of May.

The Cambrian is a 2,813-square-foot, two-storey, three-bedroom, two-and-a-half bathroom grand prize house, including all the luxuries associated with a home worth over $1 million. “The design is especially unique because the access into the home is through a gated courtyard with in-slab heating and a gas fireplace,” says Shane Wenzel, senior vice-president of sales and marketing at Shane Homes.

The Cambrian’s design uses outdoor living spaces at the front of the house as well as a heated and separate indoor space, the casita. “It’s a standalone place. The casita is quite common in certain regions in the U.S. but is quite unique in Calgary. It’s perfect for entertaining year-round (as) a poolroom, a lounge, or it can be turned into a home office. It’s whatever you want the space to be,” says Wenzel.

The front of the house has an open design so you can see all the way through to the back of the house from the foyer. The curved spindle staircase, decorative beams and 12-foot ceiling in the lifestyle room are what first greet guests.

The great room at the back end of the main floor is handsomely equipped with large windows to provide lots of light, and a gas fireplace, which has a detailed mantle and surround. Leading from the great room, is the large wide-open kitchen and breakfast nook. “What is unique about the kitchen is that it’s highlighted by a double island and a walk-through pantry,” says Wenzel. The Cambrian’s dream kitchen is equipped with stainless steel appliances, an expanse of granite countertops and generous cabinets and storage space. Access to a concrete patio off the dining room area into the backyard should also be noted.

Back inside and up the curving staircase, the second-floor hallway leads into the library/gallery. There is also a separate home office centre and conveniently-located laundry room equipped with a sink and counter space. Back in the hallway and past the library, one can step into the owner’s suite. “The owner’s suite has both a southern and eastern exposure, so it gets both sunlight and views of the back part of the park,” says Wenzel. The spacious suite is also equipped with 12-foot ceilings, skylights, an enclosed water closest, walk-in shower, drop-in spa tub, make-up spot, tower cabinets and double vanities. “It’s adorned with more closet and built-in storage spaces,” says Wenzel. In addition to two other rooms flanking the main bath upstairs, a surprising bonus of the Cambrian is its balcony, accessed from both the owner’s suite and the IT centre.

Alongside the Cambrian is the more modern Kendro, spanning 2,402-square-feet in its two storeys worth just under $1 million, and boasting three bedrooms and two-and-a-half bathrooms. “It’s completely different—more of a loft style,” says Wenzel, referring to the nine-foot ceilings throughout. The 60-degree angle of the Kendro contributes to the loft-like feel. Once inside, you’ll find a private dining area and a unique two-way fireplace separating the dining from the living room space. Beyond is a staircase with open risers and a glass wall spanning the width of the stairwell.

From the garage is handy access to the customized mudroom and powder room, which leads into the kitchen. The open plan kitchen/nook has a round raised eating bar and stainless steel appliances. At the back of the house is the living room with its customized entertainment centre and very tall windows.

The second floor boasts a loft with a built-in entertainment and IT centre overlooking the main floor. The owner’s suite boasts built-in cabinets, a window bench, soaker tub, fully-tiled shower, double vessel sinks with a concrete countertop, make-up area, and a separate water closet. “The owner’s suite is a nice focal point of the home,” says Wenzel. Two more bedrooms, a main bath and a laundry room with a practical large window and storage space-sum up the totality of the Kendro.
