Going green at home and work is getting easier. Bullfrog Power now offers 100 per cent green electricity to Alberta residential and commercial customers.

Calgary homeowner Joelly Lang has made the leap to green electricity with Bullfrog Power. “We wanted to find ways to reduce our emissions footprint,” says Lang. “Now, we’re excited that—for just a few extra dollars a month—we can make a real difference.”

Lang is one of 100 Alberta Bullfrog residential customers. Bullfrog Power is the only green power choice available to virtually all Albertans without the switching of electricity providers or retailers. The company sources green power from 100 per cent, made-in-Alberta wind power that is EcoLogo-certified under the federal government’s Environmental Choice Program.

“Supporting clean, emission-free wind power generated right here in Alberta is a significant way for both homeowners and businesses to reduce their environmental impact and help address climate change,” says Theresa Howland, vice-president, Western Region, Bullfrog Power.

“We’re thrilled to bring a new 100 per cent green power choice to Albertans that provides them with a practical, convenient means to do their part for the environment.”

Launched in Ontario in 2005, Bullfrog Power only became available in Alberta back in June. Thousands of Canadian homeowners and business owners have become “bullfrogpowered” and support the generation of clean, renewable power. Alberta residential consumers pay a premium of two cents per kWh, or on average less than 50 cents per day for the clean, green, renewable energy.

Bullfrog Power injects green electricity into the provincial grid to match the amount consumers use. While consumers pay their local supplier and experience the same service reliability, they draw power on the grid in the same way. They don’t need any special set-up or wiring to choose the green power alternative.

Currently, in Alberta, Bullfrog Power purchases power from two new wind turbines at the Oldman River wind farm near Pincher Creek and invests in Alberta Wind Energy. “Choosing green power from Bullfrog is an important way to increase the viability of new wind projects in Alberta,” says Douglas Amy, director, Alberta Wind Energy Corporation.

While in Ontario, Bullfrog Power and its partner Sky Generation, developer of the Ferndale wind farm, are developing a new Ontario wind farm which is scheduled for completion in late fall 2007. On the shores of Lake Huron, the site in Ravenswood will produce more than 26 million kilowatt hours of clean, emission-free power annually.

Already several Alberta businesses have “bullfrogpowered” some or all of their facilities including Wal-Mart, Good Earth Coffeehouse, Mountain Equipment Co-op, RBC Royal Bank and Chocolaterie Bernard Callebaut. “We feel we have a social responsibility to try to make a difference and to do something to protect the environment, even if it costs a bit more,” says Bernard Callebaut. “We are pleased that our partnership with Bullfrog Power—and their supply of 100 per cent green electricity- provides us with another means of meeting our obligation to the environment. Our hope is that we can motivate others to join us in this quest.”

Adventure travel company G.A.P Adventures chooses Bullfrog Power for its Calgary concept store. The company offers small group adventure tours, safaris and expeditions on all seven continents. “Having recently spent some time in the Arctic, I saw first-hand the effect global warming is having in one of the most affected areas of the world,” says Bruce Poon Tip, founder and CEO. “It was a reminder of the importance of our commitment to reduce our ecological footprint and to always strive to do more.”

Partnership with Pembina Institute
The Pembina Institute partners with Bullfrog Power to promote the benefits of renewable power to Canadians. A national, non-profit environmental organization, the institute is committed to advancing sustainable energy solutions.
Pembina is aligning its “Wind Power by Pembina” program with Bullfrog Power.

In 2003, the institute launched its “Wind Power by Pembina” program to “stimulate demand for green power and offer consumers an environmentally sustainable alternative to the default electricity mix on the grid.”

Through its partnership, the institute will transition its commercial and residential “Wind Power by Pembina” customers to Bullfrog Power. Its national Wind Power Computers campaign will continue. “Partnering with Bullfrog Power to deliver green power to homes and businesses will help to further advance our goal of increasing renewable energy use,” says Marlo Raynolds, executive director of the Pembina Institute. Residential customers who sign up for Bullfrog Power through the Pembina Institute will receive discounts and support its work.

“Individual action can make a big difference in the fight to stop climate change. Albertans have an incredible opportunity to choose clean, green electricity with Bullfrog,” says Raynolds.

“It’s an easy and important step we can all take to help protect the environment.” NL
