Discovery Homes

A great place to start

Take for example Discovery Homes’ palette of entry-level estate quality homes. Discovery Homes is the starter home division of Morrison Homes and they are known for building starter homes with a little bit of a twist. “We build starter homes with the specifications of a move up or estate home,” says Mike Wagner, area manager for Discovery Homes.

On display at 223 Cranberry Way SE are four show homes that demonstrate some exciting possibilities. These homes are small, – they range from 1000 to just over 1,400 square-feet, but they are well laid out  and would easily accommodate the needs of a growing family. The curb appeal is excellent and exteriors meld stone detailing with siding and shutters. Porticos, verandas, and bay windows are just a few other details offered in various designs.

The Selkirk is a 1,003 square-foot three-bedroom, four-level back split with a fifteen foot vaulted ceiling on the main floor. Discovery is using this home as their office, but one can still take a look through to glean an idea of the potential.

Next door is the Birmingham, a charming two-storey model with a bay window in both the main floor living area and the upstairs master bedroom. One enters into a small foyer that spills into the living area. Furnishings are white and black and accented with bursts of pink, lime green and yellow.  The backdrop is grey and all of the trim including the doors and banisters are detailed in a shade lighter than the grey of the walls.  A gas fireplace adds to the coziness. A small kitchen with an island, an adjacent dining area, and a powder room finish off the main floor. A well-sized deck flows from the kitchen area.

Details abound within this home – things like a cutaway in the dining area, adding extra space for a buffet or hutch and a large window in the stairwell leading upstairs.

Also showcased on Cranberry Way is the Bretton 1, an 854 square-foot two-bedroom bi-level. The home boasts a combination of textured cream wool carpeting and high quality linoleum that resembles ceramic tile throughout.

The home is designed with a jungle theme and the bedrooms feature lots of animal prints and dark wood furnishings. In the living room a feature wall is ragged in golds and browns; the rest of the home is draped in solid taupe and gold. The dining area is framed by a three-tiered step up wall that adds tremendous texture and interest.  From the dining area a sliding door opens to a landing that descends into the side yard.

Last, but definitely not least, is the Raleigh. This home is chock full of upgrades, like ceramic tile and hardwood, and features close to 1,500 square feet of living space on two stories.

The interior is Zen like and Asian influences abound. Details like a cutaway above the fireplace, a built in desk in the large and well appointed kitchen, a walk-in pantry, an upstairs laundry and a large master that boasts a spacious ensuite complete with a larger soaker tub and a separate shower stall, make this home a definite must see.  Priced starting at just under $360,000, this home demonstrates real value.

“We have about 15 models for buyers to choose from and buyers can upgrade to pretty much whatever they want,” says Wagner. Discovery also showcases homes in Silverado and Drake Landing in Okotoks. “We try to showcase as many models as we can amongst these areas, so that people get a chance to see them all.”

Discovery features a design selection studio where homebuyers can choose their entire interior finishes with the assistance of an interior designer. “It’s really one stop shopping for all of your home selections,” says Wagner.

Homes start at just over $312,000. “It’s been an interesting year,” muses Wagner. “The entry level home has now become the condo. People are now looking at these homes as a move-up product.” NL
