Buying a new home is a very exciting experience, and choosing which floor plan best suits your lifestyle is as important as where you will live. Not everyone realizes what goes into creating a new home, but there are architects and designers that work diligently behind-the-scenes to ensure that there is a wide variety of beautiful homes and unique floor plans to choose from. Anul Patel is one of these talented individuals.

Business development manager with Reid Built Homes, Anul says he was always interested in residential design and that it has always been his main forte. Not only has he graduated from NAIT’s Architectural Technologies program, but Anul also took Architecture and Design for four years at Arizona State University. For the last nine years Anul has been plying his talent with Reid Built, and his experience shows.

The Lakeside, a beautiful home being offered in Chestermere’s Westmere Estates, is an estate style two-bedroom bungalow that is anything but ordinary. “What makes this plan really wonderful is the mass openness of the public areas,” says Anul. “The common spaces are connected visually, while still able to function independently, making it ideal for socializing.” The design of this floor plan offers a line of visibility from the front of the home, straight through to the back areas. Ten-foot ceilings also add to the feeling of spaciousness; offering lots of vertical space that is further enhanced by the nine-foot-high windows and transoms all along the main floor.

An elegant and wide curved stairway leads to the optional lower development, and with such elements as convex treads and built-in plant ledges, this design feature creates a nice visual focus while serving to draw the eye further into the home where even more visually appealing features await. “The back of the home has a stylish gas fireplace with massive glazing around and above it, which visually bring the outdoor surroundings in,” says Anul. “As well, the atrium doors leading to the covered deck out back give the illusion of double doors while being extremely energy efficient.”

With such an open design, Anul says that the main challenge was creating a privacy element from the bedrooms to the public areas. “A tunnel-like design was used to lead from the public area to the master bedroom,” says Anul. “It acts as an architectural transition between the two spaces.” This capped area includes stone clad walls and a lower ceiling; giving this feature the illusion of a cave entrance. This feature is also offered for the guest room at the front of the home, but the entrance to the master bedroom is quite a bit more dramatic. The master bedroom itself is an attractive design, with a luxurious ensuite combined with a spacious walk-in closet. The inviting tub and shower with glass surround incorporates glass-block elements and lots of light by means of a large window, and his and her sinks will ensure lots of elbow room.

Combine these features with the butler’s pantry and laundry area off of the double garage, leading to a kitchen that any gourmet would fall in love with, add the formal dining room at the front of the home and a lot of attention to detail—and you have a beautifully designed home that just begs to be entertained in. “This house is meant for entertaining and throwing some good parties,” says Anul.

The Lakeside is a great sample of Anul’s talent, and soon it will be showcased as a Reid Built show home and you can take a look for yourself what years of experience and an aptitude for creativity and design can produce.

It’s a sure bet this won’t be the last of Anul’s designs, but it’s definitely a great one. NL
