Kitchens. They’re where the best house parties end, regardless of the starting point. Mere sights of the spaces conjure up scents of favourite fare memories of, helping moms and grandmas with their baking (which often amounted to licking the icing spatula), or even a flash forward to images of kids, real or imagined, seated at the island doing homework or having their morning cereal.

In a nutshell, a home’s culinary space is the hub of the home. Learn what the best-dressed dining, cooking and cleaning up hot spots are sporting in our cover story. You’ll also find gadget guru Pepper Rodriguez’s sizzling selection of bells and whistles every dolled up cuisine would be naked without. And to leave no space (or wall) untouched, Don Molyneaux turns a lens to trendy tile available for updating dated kitchen backsplashes in Focus On.

Here at New Home Living we prefer to look at fall as a new start. Decorating dynamo Alykhan Velji uncovers the latest in colours, textures and trends, and tips for giving your abode a cosy new look for the season. As fall also brings the need to get your house and yard ready for winter, L. Sara Bysterveld shares experts’ advice about readying your digs for cooler weather on page 41.

The largest New Home Living to date, this month’s issue is chock full of our regular departments—and then some. In Finishing and Furnishings, get the low-E down on how window glazing can help save energy and furniture, learn how advances in insulation alternatives are helping eco-up our homes from within in Going Green, and sample what’s on the menu for this upcoming month’s tasty Rocky Mountain Wine & Food Festival in Events.

Those who pick up the magazine for the show homes won’t be disappointed, with a new private showing of models by Sterling, Majestic and Mapeland Homes. And speaking of show homes, a special congrats goes out to all the finalists and winners in the coveted CHBA – Alberta’s annual Awards of Excellence, held last month in Jasper. Enter the winners’ circle on page 76.
