It never fails. Every year I dare to get excited about warmer weather and clear off my deck in eager anticipation—only to have the snow hit yet again in April. But as May’s now in bloom, it’s high time to get serious about outdoor living. With so many gorgeous fabrics, accessories and furnishings to deck out your living space, inside and out, why not make the most of our (albeit short) summers? Design and décorating expert Aly Velji reveals three hot themes now en vogue for decking out your outdoor digs sure to get the party started. In keeping with the spirit of the great outdoors, we freeze a frame on lounge chairs this issue, and help you take a load off in the hottest furnishings for the patio and yard.

If lounging on the lawn is not your game, “Sporting Chances” is a must-read. Sonya Procenko serves up the details on how private tennis, volleyball, and basketball courts and putting greens are giving “the family that plays together, stays together” theory a run for its money, by coming to backyards all over the province.

Speaking of sunshine, take a look at technology now available for Alberta homes to harness solar power and bring energy and light inside in our Going Green department. And those who prefer to control the sunlight coming in through windows will want to open to our Finishing and Furnishings instalment, where we shed some light on the widening world of shutters.

Those who pick up the magazine for the show home tours won’t be disappointed. In addition to Sabal Homes’ Enso—a hip take on joined homes in Copperfield—we view the brand-new house that Jager built (or one of four, actually) in Evergreen Ridge, and sample the high life on northwest Hanson Ridge in a chic Cedarglen address.

Whether you’re looking to buy a new home, perusing for decorating tips, or keeping an eye on the local building scene, there’s something for everyone in this issue of New Home Living magazine, Calgary’s only new home lifestyle magazine.
