Unfortunately green thumbs are not hereditary. Or maybe it’s just a matter of the trait skipping a generation. I know this because every summer when I take the trip east to visit my parents, I am filled with yard and garden envy at my mother’s backyard bliss, and not just at the sheer size of the space, but also her lovely lilies, terrific tulips, fabulous forget-me-nots, awe-inspiring azaleas and downright perfect perennials.

Let’s face it, some people—like my Mom or this month’s cover story scribe, Joy Gregory—are blessed with the green gene and have much wisdom to impart on those who just can’t seem to get growing. But, it turns out there is hope for the garden-challenged. With a little planning and some advice from the experts, an outside oasis is within reach, and it’s not too late to get started on bringing your back 40 or front lawn from soil to sensational.

Speaking of green, this month’s Going Green applauds the true stars of the energy world, appliances that save power and money. Live in a smaller space than you would like? Design guru Alykhan Velji is back this month with his secrets to making any home look bigger without ripping out any walls or tossing out all of your furniture.

And what’s a garden without the right gadgets? Meg de Jong has uncovered her Top 10 picks for toiling at and enjoying the fruits of your gardening labour. If working around the yard makes you cringe at thoughts of heavy, backbreaking tools, not to worry—we roll out the pink carpet for some handy implements designed just for ladies, and chat with the woman at the helm answering the call of Canadian tomboys everywhere.

Since everyone loves a parade, we tour of three photo ready show homes, this time by Elite, Sterling and Beattie. Whether you’re looking to buy a new home, perusing for decorating ideas, or just love to see what’s the city’s builders are up to, there’s a home to suit most tastes.

And the wait is nearly over to see who’ll come away with the coveted hardware from the Canadian Home Builders’ Association – Calgary Region (formerly CRHBA) Sales and Marketing Awards. We take a final look at who’s up for top honours in the April 19th Oscars of the local building industry. With so many high-quality contenders, homes and communities, it’s sure to be another nail biter.

Good luck to all the SAM finalists from your friends at New Home Living.
