Editor’s Message

From a young age I spent much of the year looking forward to all things Christmas. As adults, with family and friends often spread across the provinces or even the globe, the holidays become one of the few times for people to connect—whether that’s over an egg nog by the fire, watching the next generation of the family exuberantly rip open gifts under a well-trimmed tree, or savouring turkey and all the fixings on Christmas Day.

So this month’s cover shoot was a true treat, from shopping for New Home Living’s modern take on festive décor, to staging and getting just the right frame to grace the magazine front. It certainly helped to have such a flawless model in Sabal Homes’ Skagen in Copperfield. Unwrap this month’s issue and you’ll find we’ve packed seasonal tips to doll up any-sized halls, along with what’s sprouting up in floral and tree trends.

As the cooler weather hits and the holidays near, thoughts naturally turn to curling up by the fire, which is why a feature on fireplaces is fitting. And to end the year with a splash, we have also floated in a feature on hot tubs.

Where you opt to dig in roots is key, so this month’s It’s About Choices focuses on selecting a lot. And speaking of homes, our featured show homes—by Forte Builders in Garrison Green and Morrison in Wentworth Estates—are absolute page-turners.
That every home should be its owner’s castle is a mantra of our profiled builder, Newcastle Homes. Sample some local palaces crafted by the 20-year-old Calgary builder.

Green seems to be the buzzword of late as we try to lessen the mark we leave on this earth, so to round out our community tours for ’07 we take a trip through North America’s first solar community right here in our backyard, Okotoks’ Drake Landing by United Communities.

Next month: Join us as we start 2008 right with our Health & Wellness issue. Watch for our regular tried-and-true features and a few we hope will become new favourites.
