Bath basics

In this year’s bathroom-themed issue, we explore design trends for what is often the most used room in the house. The bathroom — when designed right — can be our own little retreat, with a sexy spa-like ambiance that helps us relax. Our resident design specialist, Aly Velji, knows how important this room can be and the rigours he recently went through in designing his own bathroom informs us of what can make the loo luxurious. In-house photographer Don Molyneaux covers bathroom vanities and sinks in his Focus On photo feature, while Going Green’s L. Sara Bysterveld explores the world of ‘green’ scents — an essential element in the bathroom, as well.

Also on tap this month, are three show home profiles and two community features. Our cover feature extols the virtues of Mahogany, the newest lake community in the southeast that boasts a fun-filled year-round active lifestyle that makes the most of its 63-acre lake — the biggest in Calgary. Speaking of water features, we also take a look at the budding community development of Watermark at Bearspaw on the border with the County of Rockyview. It will be the first fully-serviced, master-planned community in the district.

We also spotlight Jayman MasterBUILT’s two lovely show homes that recently opened in Chaparral Valley that reminds us again of the builder’s design finesse when it comes to building family homes. Shane Homes’ Sage Hill show home will not be outdone, and its enormous flexibility and open concept design — coupled with this great location — is still a hit among families.

Our associate publisher Jim Zang outlines what’s in store for Calgary’s home building industry this year in his Market Outlook feature, where he consults some of the biggest names in the business to find out what’s ahead.  He also takes us on a tour of the Stars Lottery jackpot home by Augusta Homes, whose sheer grandeur will surely spur ticket sales for this worthwhile cause.

We wrap up the issue with my Gadgets product feature of bathroom items that can add to the stylish ambience of your personal retreat.
