The spring phenomenon

Do you know how I can tell that it’s spring? No, not by looking out the window — that’s only telling me it’s still the middle of winter with the foot of snow still on my driveway. The foolproof way I can tell it’s spring is when the annual SAM Awards winners are announced. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the 2010 winners of the Calgary housing industry’s own Oscar night have just been announced, and Morrison Homes walks off with its 10th straight Grand SAM Award. Congratulations, one and all!

You can tell the fullness of spring as well with the immense traffic to the new show home parades all over the city. We have a bunch of new show homes that just opened up, including our cover feature on Sabal Homes’ Koti, which is part of the two new show home parades in the popular lakeside community of Mahogany. The Essence of Panorama Hills also has a couple of new duplex designs that Creations by Shane Homes says will redefine the semi-detached lifestyle. The newly renamed Brookfield Homes — they used to be Heartland Homes and Hawthorne Homes — also made their single-family homes debut in Cranston with five new show homes in their parade. Crystal Creek Homes’ distinctive Arlington show home in Currie Barracks has attracted its share of visitors since it opened last month and is a great example of the new kind of inner city homes available in the former military base.

Spring is also about gardening and this issue we’re lucky to have expert gardener, Patricia Johnson, explains to us how to make your garden “greener.”

And what better way to enjoy the bounty of nature in your backyard (or patio, or deck) than to kick back in your own outdoor living room, which I discuss at length in my Shopping feature on patio paraphernalia — from barbecues, to today’s lawn furniture, to modern awnings and windscreens, we talk about what maximizes enjoyment of your private outdoor space.

Our superstar in-house design specialist, Aly Velji, also gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the hit reality show My RONA Home, where he is undertaking design duties for the Blue Team. He tells me to tell readers to “Vote Blue.”

The spring in our step is not just because of the great weather (I hope), it’s the anxiousness to get outdoors and do some gardening, barbecuing, or just show home shopping.
