Enjoying the outdoors

I just can’t get enough of the warm weather we’ve been enjoying in Calgary lately (finally!). And what better way to celebrate it than with some features on how you can enjoy this even more while still at home?

Aly Velji sets his sights on turning your dull deck into a perfect patio in his Design and Décor feature on outdoor living. It doesn’t even have to cost much either as he uses pieces from PC Home just to illustrate the point.

The deck is your outdoor living room, but you shouldn’t forget about your actual living room this summer. Decorating with art is a fun way to liven up the living room and I get to talk to a couple of the best art galleries in Calgary to discuss the merits of owning original artwork — not the mass-produced stuff from the big box stores, rather those singular works that come from the artists’ soul and speak to yours. We also get to talk about different ways to frame and display your paintings to make the most of the available wall space in your home.

The warmer weather has also brought the bloom in our show home parades and we get to look at a lot of them over the past couple of weeks, with new parades almost opening every weekend this spring. Our cover feature on Creations by Shane Homes’ Gardenwalk in King’s Heights in Airdrie tells us of the new design that make this duplex stand out by appearing as a large single-family home instead of the conventional mirror approach. We also get to view a couple of the latest show homes in Cochrane: Innovations by Jayman’s outstanding Opus in Riversong and Trico Homes’ Fairmont in Heritage Hills — both take the design for single-family homes to a new level of excellence. There are even more show home parade openings that we mention in our Around Town column.

Lastly, we give you the other half of the My RONA Home contestants in the second season of the popular reality TV show. We talk to designer Alana Humphreys and her Yellow Team and look at what edge they can have over Aly Velji’s Blue Team. Alana tells me to remind people to watch the show on CityTV on Sundays and to vote Yellow.
