Airdrie in our minds

How time flies … I know, it’s such a banal comment, but it does seem like Airdrie, Calgary’s little sister city to the north, has literally grown up over night. Fast-forward a hundred years or so to today and you see nothing small about this vibrant, bustling, growing city. That is except for the small town heart it treasures.

In this issue’s Loving Airdrie Living special section, we celebrate everything about Airdrie, from the prestigious builders and developers that call the city home — and provides the homes for the increasing number of people putting down roots here — to its robust growth and the events that give this teeming urban centre its unique character.

It’s not the only celebration we’re doing in this issue. We also have Jillian Harris of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition fame, who is one of the headliners at this year’s Calgary Home + Design Show. This much-anticipated event celebrates the home and all its aspects from September 22 to 25 at the BMO Centre, Stampede Park.

Jillian, a former star of The Bachelorette, will be talking about how we can spice up our home design by revealing pieces of ourselves — check out our interview with her in this issue’s feature article.

The Calgary Home + Design Show is certainly big business, as well, attracting more than 30,000 visitors every year. It is a big stage for our resident designer Aly Velji, but it’s nothing new to this rising design star, who gives us a sneak peak at what we can expect to hear from him at the show in his monthly Design and Décor feature.

It is a jam-packed show issue, as we shine a light on United Communities newest undertaking, Nolan Hill, which celebrates not only the green legacy of the British Isles in the greenness of its parks and open spaces, but in its innovative environmental measures as well.

We also get to peak into the design innovations of Jayman MasterBUILT’s gorgeous new show homes in Riversong, the family-friendly charm of Shane Homes new parade in the new northwest estate community Valley Pointe, and also take part in Cedarglen’s 30th Anniversary with their alluring all-inclusive package as seen in their New Brighton show home.

The Canadian Home Builders’ Association – Alberta (CHBA – Alberta) also came out with the finalists of the 2011 Alberta Awards of Excellence in Housing Calgary Home Builders Association. The association had record-breaking 283 entries this year from builders and renovators across the province. Winners will be announced next month, and you know New Home Living will be there to cover that.
