Star struck
As editor of two monthly magazines where I still do most of the writing, I can’t blame people if their image of me is of some desk jockey chained to his laptop. There are days that certainly feel like that (especially as deadline looms) but I do still get some time to venture outside and even hobnob with some of the industry’s movers and shakers in our never-ending quest to give readers the latest happenings in Calgary’s new homes and condos market.

This past month saw me chatting it up with a couple of international home industry celebrities: first was Jillian Harris of Extreme Home Makeover and The Bachelorette fame, and then the guy whom all contractors hope to become one day — Mike Holmes. I met Jillian at the recent Calgary Home + Design Show and she was a delight and as bubbly as her TV persona. Mike was ever the consummate professional as he toured Avalon Master Builder’s Discovery 5 net zero home and reminds us the beauty of using old school home building methods with the advancements in green technology to build sturdy, energy-efficient homes.

SkyView Ranch is of course the star of this issue, as the latest development from Walton Developments spearheads the transformation of Calgary’s northeast quadrant into the premiere residential community it was always meant to be. They’ve just opened new show home parades for single- and multi-family homes and are well on the way to become the face of the New North. Cardel Homes is also making their own community in Evansview where they are the exclusive single-family homebuilder, just check out their latest show home — Hawthorne 3 — to see what lifestyle they offer here. Creations by Shane Homes takes us deeper into our exploration of SkyView Ranch as their parade of starter products here showcase the affordable luxury everyone wants. While in Cranston, Brookfield Homes’ laned-home parade is ruled by the popular Ashton that has been a big hit since it was introduced in April. Vesta Properties’ Williamstown in Airdrie is also in focus as the developer launches two new phases in the popular community.

Elsewhere, Aly Velji gives us a hint of how his designs for the Mosaic Lakeside show suites can cross over to single-family homes, especially for starter homes. And our photo feature on chaise lounges brings this from the psychiatrist’s office to our living rooms, where our TV feature transports you into a new world of home entertainment.

The stars it seems are aligned in our favour here in Calgary as far as the new home market goes and it certainly seems we’re moving in the right direction. But whatever the future brings, you can trust that New Home Living will be there to provide the latest market news and developments.
