May parade

The month of May starts the busy season for most new home builders. This is the month when tons of spanking new show homes are launched, when the most eye-catching designs make their debut, and even the most weary show home viewers get that sparkle back in their eyes at the prospect of discovering new ways to arrange their home.

Our cover feature on Vesta Properties’ Williamstown in Airdrie illustrates this phenomena best, as they are opening not one, not two, but a dozen show homes spread across three phases of this booming Airdrie community. As for new designs, look no further than the newly opened show homes in Sherwood from Shane Homes and Genesis Builders Group — both have family-living functionality and style down to a science and it is worth your while to see what’s happening in this up-and-coming neighbourhood in the northwest. Cardel Homes’ struts their stuff in Cranston as their Hawthorne show home demonstrates the stylish functionality their single-family homes are known for.

With spring well sprung, we thought with cast our focus on the backyard, which some multi-family developments — mostly townhomes — still have. You want to fix up your private outdoor space and we give you all the information to do it. From mapping out your deck designs in Jessica Patterson’s On Trend feature, to putting together the ideal stay-cation home in your backyard with Kathy McCormick’s Shopping feature (her initial assignment for us, and you can expect more great stuff to come from her in the coming months). And wrap it up with how to xeriscape your yard.

As if this issue wasn’t choc full of goodness already, we have our latest community special section in the Loving Airdrie Living pullout. With annexation now a reality, it looks like Calgary’s little sister to the north isn’t so little anymore.

Spring also marks the SAM Awards season, the local industry’s equivalent to Hollywood’s Oscar night, and you can check out the partial list of this year’s winners. Congratulations to all!

It’s always great to see the new home fashion and designs out there, so have fun on your show suite tours, just don’t forget to remove your footwear. But shoes or no, you can trust that New Home Living will bring you the latest news of what’s going on in the industry.
