Start it up

I find myself singing Auld Lang Syne (humming, really, I can’t sing worth two bits) and people at the office are giving me strange looks, as it isn’t even close to Christmas yet as I write this. But I am ready for the New Year, and so it seems, is the Calgary housing market.

2015 may prove to be challenging — not only because of the plummeting price of oil, which can dampen our whole economy — but also in facing the question of how we handle our growth.

The Canadian Home Builders’ Association – Calgary Region and the Urban Development Institute – Calgary have been working on a new strategy called the Smarter Growth Initiative and have recently published a guidebook “How to Build A Great City” with the goal of raising awareness among Calgarians about key trends and issues in urban planning and development.

A joint CHBA-UDI statement says they are “working alongside The City of Calgary to support smarter growth and development in our thriving city and that we need housing of all types in every part of the city and its surrounding region to accommodate that growth and to keep our economic advantage.” We’ll fill you in on details of this initiative in the coming months.

Meanwhile, we get to see what this growth so far has yielded to homebuyers in our cover feature on Riverstone of Cranston — a new riverside estate community by Brookfield Residential in the southeast quadrant that has seen some of the highest growth rates in the city. We see all the housing choices that are offered here — from townhomes to villas to million-dollar estate homes — and perhaps offering that much choice is the blueprint for further smarter growth.

We then take you to Airdrie to Genesis Builder Group’s newest show home, The Arabella in Pier 11. Then back to Cityscape in the northeast where Mattamy Homes is launching a new show home parade.

We also have David Crosson giving us tips on organizing our closets in Style, Kathy McCormick telling us the hottest coffee makers in Shopping, and Shelley Boetcher guiding us to find the hidden treasures of Bridgeland/Renfrew in our latest regular featre: A Day In (Community), Shelley will be going to different communities in and around Calgary to tell us what amenities can be found there. It’s the perfect guide for those new to Calgary and even for us old hands who don’t get to explore the city as much as we’d like to.

So, early as it may be, let us at Source Media Group be the first to greet you a Happy New Year. You can expect more from us next year, as we continue to chart our city’s growth and the changing lifestyles that this brings.
