The big stage

All the world’s a stage, just some are bigger than others. And no stage is bigger in Calgary’s home building industry than the SAM Awards of the Canadian Home Builders Association – Calgary Region. This year’s gala night on April 18 at the TELUS Convention Centre saw 116 companies vying for 58 awards. And this is the kind of competition of ideas that ultimately rewards the homebuyer.

“This year’s SAM Awards was extremely close,” says Shane Wenzel, chair of the SAM committee for CHBA – Calgary Region. “The coveted SAM bird is an award that the industry has come to take very seriously. It is a symbol of the best-of-the-best that the residential construction industry in the Calgary region has to offer.”

It is this kind of competition that spurs land developers and home builders into creating innovative home and community designs, and you can say that Genesis Builders Group’s new Pier 11 community in Airdrie is a result of this kind of push. Our cover feature story reveals that this new phase of Genesis’ hit Bayside community has some new ideas in home designs aimed at maximizing the lifestyle potentials for their owners. Albi Homes’ Savona in Riverstone also displays the kind of imaginative designs that brings the most out of an open-to-above main floor design. While Cedarglen Homes makes a spectacular debut in Walden with a pair of very popular move-up home show homes.

Don’t forget to check out the latest updates on the Airdrie home scene in our Loving Airdrie Living supplement that comes with this issue.

As always, Kathy McCormick and David Crosson bring us the best in creating your lifestyle with their Shopping and Style features. Kathy gives us an inside look on the design potentials of barstools, while David tells of the importance of fresh design styles in the half-bath — it is where your guests freshen up after all.

These are challenging times in the home building industry right now, but with the kind of design innovation that friendly competition brings out, we are confident that the industry can continue to thrive.
