Cardel gets the exclusive

Shelley Williamson

The verdict is out—Remington Development Corporation has selected Cardel Homes as its exclusive builder of townhomes and single-family addresses in the unique community of Quarry Park. The plan for the southeast neighbourhood is to create one the largest live-work-play Calgary communities, with 1.7 million square-feet of office space (housing 9,000 staffers) and 2,100 homes (townhomes, single- and multi-family). Cardel, whose employees are currently spread out over three buildings across the city, will also relocate to one corporate office in the north campus of Quarry Park next summer.

At an onsite event, Remington President Randy Remington called the choice a good fit. “Cardel’s knowledge, reputation for excellence and building standards and their philosophy of giving back to communities makes Cardel a significant asset in this benchmark development.” Ryan Ockey, Cardel’s president, dubbed Quarry Park “one of the most desirable communities in which to live given its exquisite design features, including the interconnected parks, pathways and flowing streams.” Cardel will craft 500 Georgian and French Country homes on the 314-acre site that for 50 years was home to a gravel and wash site for Lafarge Canada, flanked by Douglasglen and Riverbend.

Remington began the development process—which meant draining a billion litres of water—back in 2006. The area is expected to be complete in six or seven years.

Cardel also announced plans to contribute $10 million in addition to the City’s pledged $70 million to build a 200,000-square-foot sports and recreation facility in the southeast community, which will include two hockey rinks, two gyms, meeting rooms, a playground, indoor and outdoor soccer fields, a lap pool, lounge and eatery. Cardel also plans to relocate Tanbridge Academy, a not-for-profit sports training facility for students Grades 4 to 12, by buying or leasing the land adjacent the proposed sports complex.

Quarry Park show homes break ground in the fall and are expected to open by spring.
