Show Home Buffet

Jim Zang

I’ve been out to Copperfield a couple of times now since last summer, which I thought was okay since, as the editor of a new home lifestyles magazine, you want to spread yourself around and not pay too much attention to one specific community at the expense of others.

Yet here I am at Copperfield once again because, frankly, this new community by five-time developer of the year Hopewell, with 18 brand new show homes opening in November alone, is just too big to ignore.

In fact, if you’re a numbers person, Copperfield occupies an area of about 500 acres and, when the ten-year plan is complete, will boast about 4000 homes. Future development also includes three school sites, a community centre site and shopping plaza.

The community features three architectural styles: urban, classical, and heritage. Seven well-known home builders offer homes in four distinct price ranges. Starting from the $300,00s are homes from Innovations by Jayman and  Sabal Crafted Homes; from the $420,000s+ are slightly larger houses from Homes by Avi, Broadview Homes, Stepper Custom Homes, and Sabal Crafted Homes; and the enclave of Copperleaf has executive style homes by Albi Homes and Jayman MasterBUILT from the $500,000s, some backing on to Wildflower Pond. At $260,000-plus, the Chalet townhomes by Sabal provide a very realistic starter opportunity.

As promised, the homes have lots of character. And lots of individuality, but enough architectural coordination that it’s not a dog’s breakfast of  styles and colours, this despite the option of  23 exterior colour palettes.
My wife and I popped over to the community at the intersection of 52nd Street SE and the Marquis of Lorne Trail (22X) recently to tour several of the new homes and had no problem at all following the signage right to the four new Albi and Jayman MasterBUILT show homes in Copperleaf. At between 2,000 and 2,500 square feet each, these aren’t the biggest homes in town, but they are some of the biggest in Copperfield, and some of the nicest. In fact, it’s just the size and price that are mid-range with these homes, because the finishings are definitely done upper-end, estate-home style. Features like dark hardwood flooring, granite countertops, tile and stone accents, sunken bathtubs – all the extras we’re used to seeing in much larger show homes – are all standard. And that’s the whole point, affordable homes by builders with a reputation for attention to detail.
