Cardel Dover into revamp

Shelley Williamson

Cardel Homes is putting lots of TLC and elbow grease into rebuild one of the city’s women’s shelters. YWCA’s Mary Dover House, which opened in the 1970s to lend safe, affordable shelter to women and children in crisis or transition, sees 2500 annually, but hasn’t had much in upgrades since its inception.

“Although the shelter is warm and dry, it is not comforting to those people that need it most,” says Heather Dougall-Hall, marketing and event manager for Cardel. “… Cardel felt that it is their responsibility to the community to give these women and children a welcoming, comfortable ‘home’ as they try to get back on their feet.”

After a citywide challenge raising more than $400,000 in cash and donated items, volunteers will refurbish three floors of bedrooms, bathrooms, lounge areas, reception and a child’s playspace to estate showhome condition in just 10 days, beginning Oct. 3.
